Fiesta de la Tirana (Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival), Chile

July 15 - July 16

La Tirana, Chile

The Fiesta de la Tirana, or the Festival of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, is one of the most significant religious and cultural events in Chile. This vibrant celebration is imbued with the spirit of faith, tradition, and national unity. Its origins date back to 1648 when, according to legend, a native named Juan Pastor discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary buried in the sands of the Atacama Desert.

The festival combines the traditions of the indigenous peoples of northern Chile, such as the Aymara, Kunza, and Atacameño, with church celebrations in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also known as the Virgin of Carmen or Carmelite. These ancient traditions have been incorporated into Catholic ceremonies over the centuries, creating a unique expression of popular culture.

Festival Program and Highlights

Festival Program and Highlights

The central event is a grand religious procession, during which the statue of the Virgin Mary is solemnly carried through the town. Colorful costumes, the sounds of national instruments, and the scent of incense create an unforgettable atmosphere.

One of the main highlights of the Fiesta is the "Dance of the Devils" (diablada), during which men in devil costumes and women dressed as angels perform a ritual dance, warding off evil spirits and symbolizing purification.

More than 200 dance groups from all over the country come to La Tirana from July 10 to 14 to present their performances to the organizers. They are then scheduled for the main festival days on July 15 and 16. The dance groups perform several times, including in the town square, in front of the Golgotha cross, and in the church. Expect carefully crafted, colorful costumes celebrating Chilean traditions and music from orchestras with wind instruments and drums.
