APRIL 16 - OCTOBER 27
The Stratford Festival in Ontario pays tribute to the Bard throughout the summer.
History of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival
The Stratford Festival in Ontario has a rich history dating back to 1953. Founded by journalist Tom Patterson as a way to revive the city, the festival was inspired by Shakespeare's hometown, Stratford-upon-Avon in England. Initially focused exclusively on Shakespeare's plays, the festival has flourished into a more diverse theatrical event. Tyrone Guthrie was the festival's first artistic director.
In 1953, Alec Guinness, working for a modest fee, opened the first festival with a production of "Richard III." Actors who have performed here include Christopher Plummer, Peter Ustinov, Maggie Smith, William Shatner, and Christopher Walken.
In 2022, the Tom Patterson Theatre, one of Canada's leading theatrical venues, was opened at the festival.
